CALLING ALL BRASS is what we ‘called’ our inaugural brass band weekend, attracting over 50 participants who traveled from every corner of the province to share in what has become a signature event for our organization.  This marked the first time CBA-Ontario has held a Brass Band weekend, conforming to standard instrumentations, repertoire, and practices of the mighty brass band traditions of the UK, and many parts of Western Europe.

The province of Ontario is rich with Brass Band history and culture and arguably none more historic than the Hosts of this years CBBW, the Oshawa Civic Band.  The Oshawa Regimental and Civic Band, as it was known in the 1920’s, was an amalgamation of two bands – the Regimental Band of the 34th Ontario Regiment founded in 1866, and a Town Band in 1870 known as the Oshawa Citizens Band.  Despite loosing its military status in 1968, many of the members remained playing with the ensemble.  The ensemble today adopts the standard instrumentation and practices of a traditional Brass Band.

Having the Oshawa Civic Band host our inaugural Brass Band Weekend was strategically planned by both organizations so that the event would be part of OCB’s 150th Anniversary season.  With 5 guest conductors, and a diverse repertoire selection, all musicians performed magnificently!  To top off the excitement, we were unexpectedly visited by CTV NEWS TORONTO on Saturday afternoon, who featured the event and OCB’s Anniversary on the 6:00pm evening news!
